What is the Swiss Travel Pass and how does it work?

The Swiss Travel Pass is "the golden ticket" for everyone that doesn't have their permanent residency in Switzerland and wants to explore Switzerland by public transport. This all-in-one ticket offers unlimited travel on our extensive network of trains, buses, trams, Postautos, boats and mountain railways (where you almost always get a 50% discount to reach those mountain tops).

But the benefits of the Swiss Travel Pass doesn't just cover your odd train ticket or boat ride. It also gives you free access to over 500 museums and other attractions like art galleries, castles and even chocolate factories.

Famous scenic train rides, like the Gotthard Panorama Express or the Glacier Express, are included in the pass as well (not the reservation fees, though).

The Swiss Travel Pass is available for consecutive days (3, 4, 6, 8 or 15 days) or as a Flex pass, which offers travel on freely chosen days within a month. Upon purchase, you receive a physical or digital pass that must be presented along with a passport when travelling.

The pass is activated on its first day of use and will remain valid for the duration chosen. With the Flex version, you'll have to do the activation yourself, though.

Tips for using the Swiss Travel Pass

  • You can buy your Swiss Travel Pass ahead of time or spontaneously. It never sells out and only takes a few minutes to buy.
  • Download the SBB app on your phone to plan your trip.
  • If you want to visit a museum, always check if the Swiss Travel Pass entitles you to a free entry. This is the case with all the participating museums in this list. This also includes certain chocolate and cheese factories, by the way.
  • Don't miss out on going on one of the scenic train rides in Switzerland. Your pass is valid here and all you need to do is get your seat reservation.
  • Make sure you activate your Swiss Travel Pass Flex on the days you want to use it.
  • Always have your Swiss Travel Pass handy for inspection in combination with a document of identification.
